Cafe Gratitude

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." ~ Hippocrates

I am a carnivore -- always have been, and, absent a drastic life change, always will be.
This isn't to say I don't appreciate my fruits and vegetables -- I do!  It's just that sometimes, a juicy steak or a perfectly-grilled hamburger is the best way to my heart (and probably any future heart-attacks).

Perhaps this is why my friend challenged me to go vegetarian for 10 consecutive days.*  Aside from the fact that I wanted to prove this doubtful friend that I would (1) take on this challenge and (2) be successful at it, I wanted to redeem the prize: a steak dinner at Maestro's.  And just like that, we're back full circle.

The challenge was given several weeks ago, and though I've accepted, I've still yet to actually start my [sad] 10 consecutive days.  Again, this is unsurprising to anyone, including me.

Bar-seating

Given my carnivorous and un-hipster tendencies, I was more than skeptical to try Cafe Gratitude, a haven for not only vegetarians, but vegans, who also happen to be very, very hip.  Would it surprise you if I told you that this 100% organic, 100% vegan restaurant chain was born in SF? { more history here }  Since its success in SF, CG made its SoCal debut on Larchmont, and is now expanding westward to Venice.

But sometimes, everyone ought to face their fears -- i.e. eating at a vegan restaurant -- and give it a go.  So I did.  And much to my dismay... I liked it!  (Don't worry; refer to the 1st two sentences of this entry).

Before the server took our order, she informed us of the "Question of the Day."  Ours was "What are you saying YES to?"  I forget my eating partners' answers, but mine was "YES to eating Sprinkles after this meal."  I've accepted my fat kid ways.  You should, too.

I am Celebrating - $13

We started with "I am Celebrating," a raw ceviche with young coconut and zucchini chunks marinated with tomato, red onion, avocado, cilantro, jalapeno, red algae flakes, salsa verde and in a goji-chipotle vinaigrette, over a bed of lettuce and flax crackers.

I liked the house vinaigrette, but felt the dish was over-dressed.  Still, the ceviche was refreshing and all of the flavors of the veggies complimented each other well.  I even found the flax cracker, which had a funny texture, reminiscent of hemp paper, was delicious!

I am Liberated - $13

Then, we moved onto three additional entrees.  "I am Liberated" is a hemp seed pesto pasta made with kelp (seaweed) noodles, heirloom cherry tomatoes, green and kalamata olives, asparagus, spinach, and topped with brazil nut parmesan and julienned basil.

The creaminess of the pesto made for an interesting contrast to the slightly crunchy kelp "pasta."  Though the combo made it a little difficult to apportion, it was flavorful enough to enjoy without any trouble.

I am Whole w/ avocado - $15.25

"I am Whole" is large macrobiotic bowl with sea veggies, stewed beans, raw kale, shredded carrots, house-made red cabbage "kimchi," topped with black sesame seed gomasio (sesame salt), and with teriyaki almonds, brown rice or quinoa (or both), and tahini-garlic sauce.  Avocado slices can be added.

The warmth of the rice, quinoa, and beans was a nice change to the rest of the dishes.  Also, it was nice that even the raw veggies did not require use of the tahini sauce.  Though rich in flavor, it did not made me full in an over-eater's remorse kind of way.

I am Fabulous - $13

"I am Fabulous" is a lasagna layered with zucchini noodles, hempseed basil pesto, olive tapenade, heirloom tomato, spinach, arugula, and topped with a cashew ricotta.  Since CG is purely vegan, the "ricotta" is made by soaked cashews, water, salt, and some lemon juice.  Sure, it tastes nothing like cheese, but it's amazing how you can create a ricotta consistency with four, simple (and vegan!) ingredients.

What's even more amazing is that everything I ate at CG was delicious.  Never once was I reminded that I was eating vegan food.  Never once did I feel grossly full.  And the charm and kindness of (most) everyone at the restaurant was inviting.  Though I'm not ready to integrate this culture to my lifestyle, I can genuinely say I'm a fan of going raw!  If I can do it, you can do it, too.

Lulu's Cafe

Some of LA's best brunch places are in what Yelp calls "Mid-City West."  While I've tried out top faves, BLD, Blu Jam Cafe, Joan's on Third, Toast, and Taste, there are still many I've yet to try.  Though now, I can cross Lulu's off my list.

French Toast Blitz (full order) - $9.95

Delicious French toast topped with powdered sugar, cream cheese topping, and slices of fresh strawberries and bananas.  Like much, but not love.

Paparazzi Salad (full order) - $11.95
Isn't it amusing that a bed lettuce is often one of the most expensive items on the menu?  But this Paparazzi salad, with a wide array of grilled veggies, pine nuts, and grilled chicken breast and tossed in a house vinegrette may be worth it (maybe).

House Scramble w/ a side of home fries and corn tortilla - $10.95

The quality of Lulu's food is not quite at par with some of its other "Mid-CityWest" competitors, but if you're all about quantity, you may enjoy Lulu's just fine.  The House Scramble has at least three eggs (egg whites), goat cheese, spinach, avocado, mushrooms, and fresh basil.  With the home fries and tortilla, it's a meal for a king... or one hungry girl.

One huge perk for Lulu's is that you don't have to wait in a ridiculous line while your stomach eats itself and can still participate in people-watching while dining al fresco.

Larchmont Bungalow

There are many excellent brunch places in L.A.
But there are certain places that stand out because of its particularly attentive service (Blu Jam), consistently delicious food (BLD), or awesome portion-for-price ratio (Griddle Cafe).
Then, there are a handful of gems that know how to "do brunch" particularly well. In other words, they have the three important factors addressed above while still maintaining the ever-important, endearing charm. Lucky for you, I shall feature one right here, right now. So read on!

Aside from the occasional pick-up at Village Pizzeria, swing by Larchmont Wine & Cheese, or brief stop at Bricks & Scones, I'm rarely in Larchmont Village. Now I have a newfound reason to change all that. Why hello there, Larchmont Bungalow.

Upon entering the... err, bungalow, I kept exclaiming to myself, 'Wow, this place is so charming!' And it is. With a wood-paneled interior and blue shingled exterior, an old-fashioned coffee holder/grinder/thingamajigga and enticing cakes and muffins displayed ever-so-perfectly to attract lustful stares from all, this place captures words like "rustic" and "homey" to their fullest ("cute," as elusive as its definition is, also works). They also do an excellent job of making every single item on their menu sound ridiculously delicious.

Smoked Salmon Benedict: Smoked salmon, Bermuda onions, two poached eggs, and spinach on focaccia and topped with hollandaise and capers. Served with fresh fruit - $12.95

Nom nom nom nom.

Yes, you read correctly. Two beautifully poached eggs on focaccia bread! Eating fresh focaccia is like going to bed with a down comforter -- it's pillowy, heavenly, and brings a smile to your face. Everything about this dish - right down to the melon balls - were scrumptious!

Lobster crab sandwich, topped with a chipotle aioli and tropical salsa with crisp sweet potato fries on the side - $14.95
Bam. Take a look at those vibrant sweet potato fries. While the sandwich was good, it was really the fries that stole the show on this plate.

Berry Cloud Cake (what a fitting name!) - fluffy white cake with light cream, a layer of blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, and white chocolate shavings covering the top and sides.

Lemon bar - with very dense lemon filling.

The plain coffee (not pictured) is also pretty good.
I shall be back soon, LB!

Spiritual Food for Thought:
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14

Never be complacent.

Chapa Grill

Falafel Pita - $4.96

Chicken Kebob Plate (with hummus and Med salad on the side) - $8.95

Jerusalem Mix for the ultimate meat lover (tender chicken breast, cubed beef, lamb, ground beef) with tabouli and Med salad on the side - $10.95

Can't say Chapa's is the best Mediterranean I've ever eaten, but it does a sufficient job of satisfying that occasional "I want falafel + kebobs!" craving. I would recommend this place for lunch rather than dinner.

Bricks & Scones

lychee oolong tea w/ plain scone

Bricks & Scones is the type of place I'd like to open up one day. Friendly, quaint, and with a great selection of freshly baked goodies and soothing beverages. You have studious folks at one part of the cafe and those socializing and catching up out in the patio. The space is laid out like a house so you'll find rooms and nooks upstairs too. Overall, two thumbs up! Plus, it's owned by Koreans. Woot.

Other perks: Free wifi; students get 10% off beverages; clean; super friendly employees; north of Beverly so away from the "hustle bustle" of other Larchmont businesses; great study spot; they serve Intelligentsia coffee!
